In a sweeping overhaul, Trump removed David M. Rubenstein, the longstanding chairman and top donor, and dismissed Deborah F. Rutter, who had served as the center’s president for over ten years. A loyalist, Richard Grenell, has been installed as the new president of the Kennedy Center, marking a definitive shift in the institution’s governance and its vision. Grenell has since appointed Donna Arduin Kauranen as chief financial officer, who brings experience from various financial roles under former Republican governors.

Ahead of Trump’s arrival, JD Vance and his wife attended a concert at the Kennedy Center, where they were met with loud boos from the audience, a reflection of the polarized sentiments surrounding Trump’s leadership. This incident sparked a strong reaction from Grenell, who called for a more welcoming atmosphere at the Kennedy Center, stating, “Diversity is our strength. We must do better.
